27/10/24 Song of Songs “The Power of Love”
Last night at a dinner party, a Malaysian sister sitting at my table shared her love story. During her studies at seminary, she met her now-husband, and just a few days before she returned to Malaysia, they confirmed their relationship. However, soon after their relationship began, the pandemic struck, putting their long-distance love through many trials. In addition to the separation, they faced financial pressures and challenges in life. Yet, no matter the distance or difficulty, this couple remained firmly committed to each other, ultimately entering into marriage during the pandemic.
Her story reminded me of a passage in Song of Songs, vividly depicting the strength and resilience of love:
“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame of the Lord. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.” (Song of Songs 8:6-7)
Analysis:
“Love is as strong as death”
In the face of the pandemic’s trials, this couple showed a steadfastness like death itself, as if they were sealed on each other’s heart and arm, unshaken by the surrounding circumstances. This resilient love resembles the finality of death, an unbreakable bond and a commitment that will not let go, no matter what.
“It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame of the Lord”
This passage describes love as not only a fervent human emotion but as a passion marked with divine significance. Like the flame of the Lord, God’s glory and blessing ignited their love, making it burn brighter and unquenchable through hardship. Their love, in the face of the pandemic’s “floodwaters,” continued to burn as if fueled by God’s strength. This flame is born not only from their commitment but also from God’s blessing, making their love purer and stronger through trials.
“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away”
The pandemic resembled a flood, separating people from one another and making communication more challenging. Yet, true love grows even more precious through trials. The love of this sister and her husband was not extinguished by hardship; instead, it became more resilient in the face of challenges, embodying an indestructible holy flame.
“If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned”
The pandemic has made people more aware of the limitations of material wealth, while true love transcends the value of riches. Whether during the separation of quarantine or under financial strain, true love cannot be measured by wealth. As the scripture says, true love is priceless, and any attempt to exchange it for riches would be scorned.
This passage not only portrays the beauty of love but also reminds us that love, with the mighty flame of the Lord, is a sacred power capable of overcoming all adversity. Like a blazing fire, it burns brightly through hardship. May each of us experience such love, seal it upon our hearts, and let it be our strength and support as we journey through life’s storms together.
