The Story of the Compass and Its Four Sons
Date: 6/3/25
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
— Proverbs 9:10
The Ancient Compass
In the vast lands of ancient times, between heaven and earth, there stood an old and sacred compass. This compass was not only a guide for the lost but also a bearer of profound wisdom.
The compass had four uniquely gifted sons, each representing an essential force needed for one’s journey through life:
• East – Wisdom: Possessing deep foresight, it sees the path ahead and is not trapped by the fog of the present.
• South – Understanding: Quick and adaptable, it swiftly adjusts to change and makes the right decisions at crucial moments.
• West – Knowledge: Rich in learning, it comprehends and analyzes, providing a solid foundation for action.
• North – Reverence: Humble at heart, it fears the Lord and keeps one from being blinded by pride and desire.
However, the four brothers were each proud and unwilling to yield, each believing himself to be the most important.
• Wisdom mocked Understanding, saying, “Without foresight, your quick wit is nothing but shallow improvisation.”
• Understanding argued, “Without adaptability, even the best foresight is just an empty dream.”
• Knowledge boasted, “Your insights are all limited! Only knowledge provides true power.”
• Reverence calmly reminded them, “Without the fear of the Lord, your wisdom, understanding, and knowledge are merely arrogant foolishness.”
They quarreled endlessly, while their father, the Compass, silently watched, waiting for them to discover the real answer.
The Father’s Story
One evening, their father gathered his four sons beneath an ancient tree, weathered by time, and spoke with warmth and firmness:
“Let me tell you a story.”
**“Long, long ago, a traveler set out to cross a vast and barren desert. Trusting only in his own strength, he pressed forward with courage. But under the scorching sun, with sandstorms blurring his vision, he soon lost his way. Weary and thirsty, he began to doubt whether he would ever escape the wilderness alive.
“At the brink of despair, the traveler met a wise man. This sage gifted him with four precious strengths to help him find his way:**
• Wisdom guided his eyes toward the distant horizon, allowing him to glimpse the faint outline of an oasis. It gave him a goal, so he would not be bound by his present struggles.
• Understanding helped him adjust his steps quickly in the face of sudden sandstorms, leading him to shelter and protecting him from hidden dangers.
• Knowledge granted him the ability to read the stars, ensuring he would not wander aimlessly through the vast desert.
• Reverence kept him humble, preventing him from being deceived by mirages of false hope or refusing true guidance out of pride.
With these four strengths, the traveler finally found his way out of the desert and into the true oasis, stepping into new life.”
The Meaning of Unity
The father’s voice was deep and powerful as he looked at his four sons and continued:
“Each of you holds great value, but when separated, you are like lone stars in the night sky—though bright, you cannot fully illuminate the world.”
• “If wisdom exists without understanding, then one clings to far-off visions but misses the opportunities before them.”
• “If understanding exists without knowledge, then one reacts but lacks direction, like a wanderer without a map.”
• “If knowledge exists without reverence, then one may become arrogant, dismissing the higher guidance that prevents missteps.”
• “If reverence exists without wisdom, then one may fall into blind devotion without knowing how to walk rightly.”
“You must unite, just as the compass requires all four directions to function correctly. If you walk together as one, you will be ‘the light of the world’—guiding the lost and leading them to the right path.”
The Brothers’ Realization
The four brothers fell silent. They finally understood that no one could guide the way alone. Only by joining together could they truly become a light in the darkness.
From that day forward, Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, and Reverence were no longer divided. Under their father’s guidance, they walked as one.
No matter the storms or the trials, they remained steadfast—guiding the way, lighting the journey, and leading all who were lost toward the path of truth.
