III.
Faith in Weakness
Date: 28/5/25
Background:
During the time of the Judges, Israel had no king; everyone did what was right in their own eyes.
They repeatedly fell into cycles of rebellion and suffering.
Yet even in their constant failure, God remained full of mercy, raising up judges to deliver them.
In this chapter of history, God raised up a prophetess, Deborah, who was filled with heavenly wisdom and courage.
When Israel was oppressed by King Jabin of Canaan and his commander Sisera, God called the warrior Barak through Deborah to rise up and fight.
However, when facing a mighty enemy, Barak showed weakness. He said to Deborah:
“If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.” (Judges 4:8)
This hesitant request seems to echo the deepest cry in our hearts:
“Lord, I am afraid. Please assure me that You are with me, or I cannot move forward.”
Deborah agreed to go with him, but she also declared that because of this, the honor Barak could have received would be given to another.
Scripture:
Judges 4:8 Barak said, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.”
Judges 4:9 “Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.
Reflection and Interpretation
I. Barak’s Weakness: Fear of Walking Alone
• Barak knew God’s calling but chose to rely on visible companionship out of fear of the enemy.
• His faith needed support, revealing his spiritual immaturity.
• We, too, often whisper at the crossroads of life:
“If I can’t feel You, Lord, I don’t dare to move forward.”
II. Deborah’s Companionship and Her Truthful Reminder: Mercy Mingled with Truth
• Deborah agreed to accompany Barak, showing spiritual compassion.
• At the same time, she firmly pointed out: hesitant faith would cost him the glory of victory.
• God’s plan would not be halted by human weakness, but the position and reward could pass to someone else (later Jael).
III. God’s Grace Surpasses Human Weakness: Victory Is Still Achieved
• Even though Barak’s faith faltered, God still used him to lead Israel to victory over Sisera.
• God does not seek flawless people, but those who are willing to respond even amidst weakness.
• In every moment of fear and hesitation, God’s mercy is greater than our shortcomings.
Personal Reflections
1. When God calls me, do I delay or hesitate?
God desires that I step out in faith, even when the road ahead is unclear.
2. Is my faith rooted in God’s voice, or dependent on human companionship?
God calls me to trust Him directly, rather than relying on visible confirmations.
3. Even when weak, am I willing to take one step forward at a time?
God never despises my fear but patiently waits for me to stumble forward toward Him.
4. Am I willing to be the one God uses in times of danger?
Like Jael, regardless of outward appearance or status, simply believing that God can accomplish great things through me.
A Little Prayer
Lord,
When I am afraid,
remind me that You have never left.
When I hesitate,
uphold me and strengthen my heart with Your promises.
Even when I am weak,
I am willing to step forward by faith,
to walk on the path You have prepared for me,
until I receive the heavenly glory You have promised.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
