📖 Rebellion, Falsehood, and Repentance in the Book of Zechariah
🗓️ May 29 2025
⸻
We all know that God desires us to be vessels of sincerity and purity. Yet, the book of Zechariah reveals how the hardness and deceitfulness of the human heart can break God’s heart.
What is rebellion?
It is refusing to listen to God’s voice, resisting and evading His guidance.
What is falsehood?
It is using lies to cover up our transgressions, hiding the truth of our sins, and pretending that everything is fine.
Zechariah 7 says:
“They refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder; they stopped their ears so that they would not hear. They made their hearts as hard as diamond.”
God calls, yet people turn their faces away; God knocks, yet people close their ears.
This is the reality of rebellion.
Zechariah 5 speaks of the “flying scroll,” a symbol of God’s judgment.
It enters every hidden corner of sin and uproots all falsehood.
For God hates lies—not only because they harm others, but because they pierce His own heart.
Yet God’s desire does not end with judgment. He weeps, He waits, He calls.
Zechariah 12:10 says:
“I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on Me, the One they have pierced.”
Yes, our falsehood and rebellion are like nails driven into the hands of Jesus,
and yet He still calls out, “My child, come back to Me.”
True repentance is not something we can produce by our own willpower.
It is God’s Spirit piercing our hearts—bringing us to tears, to sorrow, and to turning back to Him.
⸻
Reflection
• Am I resisting God’s Word?
• Am I using lies to cover up my weaknesses?
• Have I realized that my sins have pierced the heart of the Lord?
• Am I willing to humble myself and ask God to pour out the “Spirit of grace and supplication”?
⸻
🙏 Prayer
Lord,
We confess that our rebellion and falsehood have deeply pierced Your heart.
You weep for us, but we turn away; You bleed for us, but we continue to hide.
Lord, have mercy on us!
Pour out the “Spirit of grace and supplication.”
Pierce our hardened hearts,
that we may see our sins and behold Your broken love.
Lord, we are willing to repent—
to weep, to return, to turn away from lies, and to run back into Your arms.
Cleanse us, renew us,
and make us a people who are honest, peaceful, and pleasing in Your sight.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
