📖 Worshiping God Not Because We Are Good Enough: Insights from John Chapter 4

🗓️ Date: June 3, 2025

1️⃣ Background of the Scripture

John 4:23-24
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

In this conversation, Jesus reveals to the Samaritan woman God’s heart for worship:
• Worship is not confined to a particular mountain (Mount Gerizim, where the Samaritans worshiped),
• Nor is it limited to a particular religious system (the Jewish temple),
• But it is about worshiping in spirit and truth — a wholehearted and genuine response.

2️⃣ God Calls Us to Worship Him Not Because We Are Good Enough

2.1 The Background of the Samaritan Woman
• She was an outcast, having failed in five marriages, and the man she was with was not her husband (John 4:18).
• She was a Samaritan — considered unclean by the Jews.
• She came to draw water at noon, the hottest time of the day, possibly avoiding the crowd (John 4:6).

2.2 Human Standards vs. God’s Grace
• By human standards, she was not good enough, not holy enough, not “worthy.”
• Yet Jesus approached her, spoke with her, broke cultural barriers, and revealed the secrets of the Kingdom.
• Jesus did not demand that she become “worthy” first, but invited her to come to the living water and receive it.

👉 This shows us: God calls us to worship, not because we are good, but because He is good.

3️⃣ The True Reason for Worship: God’s Love and Calling

3.1 God Actively Seeks Worshipers

“The Father is seeking such people to worship Him.” (John 4:23)
God looks for those willing to respond to Him, not those who are already good enough.

3.2 It’s Not Because We Are Good Enough, But Because of His Grace

Worship is not a stage to showcase our perfection; it is a place where we bring our brokenness, authenticity, and weakness before Him.
• It’s not “I’m good enough to worship,”
• But “I’m not good enough — that’s why I need to come to God.”

3.3 Worship Is God’s Invitation into His Presence

God’s heart is not about keeping us at a distance but drawing us close:
• The Samaritan woman, after encountering Jesus, was transformed and became the first to proclaim Jesus to the people of her city (John 4:29).
• This was not because she was good enough, but because she was touched by grace.

4️⃣ Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for revealing to us that worship is not about being good enough, holy enough, or worthy enough. It is because of Your love and calling that we are invited to worship. Thank You for coming into our lives, drawing near to us, and calling us to worship You in spirit and in truth. Lord, we are so small, so broken, yet You see us, love us, and call us into Your presence. May our worship not be about performance, but about responding to Your grace. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
