I. Background: From Exile to Return

Because of their rebellion against God, the Israelites were exiled to Babylon for seventy years (see Jeremiah 25:11). But God did not forget His people. The Book of Ezra records how, according to His promise, God stirred the heart of the Persian king Cyrus to allow the Israelites to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple (Ezra 1:1–3).

II. The First Phase of Revival: Rebuilding the Temple (Chapters 1–6)

The first six chapters of Ezra describe how the first group of exiles returned under the leadership of Zerubbabel to rebuild the temple. Amid hardship, they resumed sacrifices, observed festivals, and laid the foundation of the temple. However, they also faced opposition and delays from enemies.
