Esther’s original name was Hadassah, which means myrtle tree—a symbol of life, quiet growth, being hidden, yet releasing fragrance even in the dark. This represents the season in which she was nurtured by God, a spiritual stage of being concealed, rooted, and protected.

After entering the Persian palace, she was called Esther, a name that in Persian carries the meaning of a star—symbolizing radiance, influence, and a life that shines in the night. This marked the moment when God transitioned her from the season of concealment into the season of divine assignment.

Esther 2:7 says:

“And he (Mordecai) brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther.”

This verse already carries a spiritual turning point. When she was still Hadassah, she held no position in the eyes of people—but in God’s plan she was being formed. When she was called Esther, she stepped into her destiny—not to seek personal glory, but to become the one through whom her people would be delivered.

Her name was not changed to help her fit into the palace, but because her calling had already begun. She was not born for the crown, but for “such a time as this.” Concealment was meant to strengthen the foundation; revelation was meant to fulfill the mission.
