【拿4:10】耶和华说:“这蓖麻不是你栽种的,也不是你培养的,一夜发生,一夜干死,你尚且爱惜;
📌 “God’s Mercy Surpasses Human Narrowness” — Jonah 4:10–11
📅 6 December 2025
Jonah 4:10 — But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.
Jonah 4:11 — And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
✨ 1. God Uses the Plant to Reveal the Narrowness in Our Hearts
The plant:
• Was not planted by Jonah
• Was not cultivated by Jonah
• Grew up overnight and withered overnight
• Was pure grace, completely outside of Jonah’s control
Jonah rejoiced over the plant, yet became angry when it withered—
he valued temporary comfort more than human life.
God is asking us:
• Are you too concerned about your own benefit?
• Do you get angry over small losses?
• Do you value “comfort, smoothness, shade” more than the souls of people?
The plant is temporary,
but what God cares about is eternal.
✨ 2. God’s Heart Is Far Greater Than Our Limited Hearts
God says: “There are 120,000 people in Nineveh… should I not care for them?”
The people of Nineveh:
• Many could not distinguish between right and left (children, the ignorant, those who lack moral understanding)
• God even cares for the animals in the city
This is God’s heart:
• Mercy over judgment
• Salvation over destruction
• A heart far wider than human narrowness
Jonah looked only at whether their sin deserved punishment;
God looked at whether they could be saved.
✨ 3. Reflection: What Is Your Plant?
Today, God also asks us:
• Do I value my own “shade” too much?
• Do I treat temporary benefits as if they were eternal?
• Do I wish for others to be punished, forgetting that God once had mercy on me?
The plant will wither,
but God’s mercy will never wither.
May God enlarge our hearts so that we see His mercy,
not merely our own gains and losses.
✨ 4. Prayer
Lord, may Your heart become my heart.
Enlarge my vision so I am no longer trapped by temporary things.
Help me see what You see, and love whom You love.
Teach me to show mercy and to bless others—
to be slow to anger and rich in steadfast love.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
