Cleansed Vessels, Carrying the Fire

Date: 29 December 2025

Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:5–6

2 Timothy 1:5
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

2 Timothy 1:6
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

I. Recalling the Dream

In the dream, we were going together to eat hotpot at Haidilao.

Before the meal began, however,
we kept wiping and cleaning the bowls and utensils,
again and again,
without feeling annoyed or rushed.

We were very clear about one thing:
if the bowls were not clean, they could not be used to hold hot soup.

II. Sincere Faith: Faith That Is Real (2 Tim 1:5)

The passage highlights an important phrase:
“sincere faith.”

In the dream, we were not cleaning the food,
but the bowls that would hold the food.

This helps us understand that what God first cares about
is not how passionate we appear outwardly,
but whether there is genuineness within.

Sincere faith means:
• faith without mixed motives
• faith not carrying unresolved residue from the past
• faith that is not merely clean on the surface

It is faith that God can confidently use.

Why Keep Wiping?

The most obvious action in the dream
was that we kept wiping.

This reminds us that:
• genuine faith is not settled in one moment
• it is not limited to the changes at the beginning of faith
• it is shaped through continual adjustment and renewal as we grow

God’s willingness to spend time preparing in this way
shows that this is not an empty vessel.

III. Fanning the Gift into Flame (2 Tim 1:6)

The passage continues by saying
that the gift God has given should be fanned into flame.

Here, something important must be clarified.

🔥 Where Does the Fire Come From?
• The fire comes from God
• Spiritual gifts are not produced by us
• From the beginning, the fire belongs to God

Yet Scripture says:
“fan into flame the gift of God.”

This shows that
God is the source of the fire,
and we are those who respond to the fire.

Why Hotpot in the Dream?

Hotpot requires three things:
• a real fire
• sustained heat
• vessels that can withstand the heat

In the dream, we were going to eat hotpot.
In the passage, the image is fire.

The meaning is clear:
God has already given the fire,
but whether it continues and functions well
depends on whether the vessel is prepared.

Fanning, Not Reigniting

The Scripture says “fan into flame,”
not “ignite again.”

This tells us that:
• the gift has already been given
• the fire has not gone out
• the question is not whether God has given
• but whether we have prepared vessels for the fire

That is why, in the dream,
we cleaned the bowls first,
instead of rushing to light the fire or begin the meal.

IV. Three Generations of Faith, and Our Role

The passage mentions three generations:
• the grandmother
• the mother
• Timothy

This reminds us that faith and gifts
do not appear suddenly.
They are entrusted and passed down.

In the dream, we were not those sitting and waiting to eat,
nor were we the ones controlling the fire.

We were the ones preparing the bowls.

This shows that
our responsibility is not to create the fire,
but to prepare suitable vessels
for the fire God has already given.

V. Integrated Summary (Key Points)
• The fire comes from God
• The gifts are entrusted by God
• Fanning into flame is not human self-manufacture
• It is a human response of sincerity and cleansing
to what God is already doing

When God chooses to let the fire burn strongly again,
a prepared vessel
will be able to carry it.

VI. Response Prayer

Lord,
thank You for giving sincere faith
and for entrusting spiritual gifts.

As You lead us through seasons of cleansing and preparation,
help us not to rush or to avoid the process.

May we prepare ourselves well,
so that the fire You have given
can be steadily carried,
rightly used,
and not wasted.

Amen.
