From Knowing to Abiding
A Devotional from 1 John
📅 Date: 6 January 2026
⸻
📖 Key Verse
“Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.”
— 1 John 2:6
⸻
🕊 Reflection
1 John was not written to make believers smarter.
It was written to keep believers close.
John is addressing people who already know Scripture,
already use correct language,
already claim spiritual insight.
Yet John gently asks a deeper question:
Are you still living with Him?
In this letter, “knowing God” is never about:
• mastering doctrine
• winning arguments
• proving spiritual maturity
Instead, knowing God looks like:
• remaining
• loving
• walking
• staying in the light together
You can know many verses
and still drift from relationship.
That is why John repeatedly ties knowing to loving.
“Whoever loves knows God.” (1 John 4:7)
Not because love earns God,
but because love reveals nearness.
Love is not the goal.
Love is the evidence that we are still abiding.
⸻
🔍 Heart Check
Ask gently, without condemnation:
• Am I relating to God mainly through information?
• Has obedience become mechanical instead of responsive?
• Do I talk about God more than I walk with Him?
• Is love flowing freely—or has it thinned?
John does not tell us to try harder.
He calls us to come closer.
⸻
🌿 Invitation
1 John is God saying:
“Stay with Me.
Don’t replace Me with ideas about Me.
Don’t let knowledge crowd out love.
Remain.”
⸻
🙏 Prayer
Lord,
bring me back from knowing about You
to living with You.
Where my faith has become correct but cold,
softly draw me home again.
Teach me to abide.
Teach me to love.
For in loving, I truly know You.
Amen.
