No Longer Relying on Ourselves, but on Grace
Devotional – July 5, 2026
Scripture:
“For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.”
— Romans 7:18
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set me free from the law of sin and death.”
— Romans 8:1–2
In my dream, we all wanted to become people who are a blessing to others. We desired to do good, yet somehow we kept falling short.
When I woke up, I was reminded of Paul’s struggle in the Book of Romans. It was not that he did not know what was right, nor that he lacked the desire to do it. Rather, he discovered that when he relied on himself, there was always another power pulling him back into failure and weakness.
This is the experience of many of us. Time and again we resolve to change, only to discover that human determination has its limits, and our own strength eventually runs out.
Thankfully, Romans does not end with chapter 7.
Paul does not remain in the cry, “What a wretched man I am!” Instead, he enters chapter 8 with a triumphant declaration: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
God has never asked us to become better people through our own efforts. Instead, He gives us a new life. He not only forgives our past but also places His Holy Spirit within us, empowering us to live the life that pleases Him.
True faith, therefore, is not about constantly striving to become better by our own strength. It is about continually returning to Christ and receiving His grace.
Human effort may change outward behavior, but God’s grace transforms the whole person.
Today, let us stop depending on our own strength and learn to rely on the Lord who dwells within us. True transformation does not begin with human determination—it begins with God’s grace.
Reflection:
Am I still trying to prove myself through my own efforts, or am I willing to receive the new life Christ gives each day and allow the Holy Spirit to live out His likeness in me?
