看得见,却抓不住;

“Steam It All Away”

August 16, 2026 | A Reflection on Ecclesiastes

📖 Scripture

Ecclesiastes 1:2, 14

“Meaningless! Meaningless!
Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”

“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

✦ Reflection

There was a picture:

A steamer was sitting there, but there was nothing to put inside it.

The fire could be lit, the water could boil, and the steamer was ready.

But inside, it was empty.

In the end, all that came out was steam.

This reminds me of a word that appears repeatedly in Ecclesiastes:

Meaningless.

The Hebrew word is Hevel (הֶבֶל), which literally carries the imagery of breath, vapor, or mist.

You can see it, but you cannot hold onto it.
It appears for a moment, then disappears.

This is exactly how the Teacher describes life “under the sun.”

We can be extremely busy.

We work hard, pursue success, accumulate wealth, seek enjoyment, and keep building bigger and better “steamers” for ourselves.

Everything on the outside may look complete, while the inside remains empty.

We think that if we make the fire hotter and keep steaming longer, surely something will come out of it.

But Ecclesiastes asks a deeper question:

What is actually inside your steamer?

If there is nothing of true value within, then no matter how big the steamer, how strong the fire, or how busy the process, in the end, all that may remain is vapor.

Steam and steam, and in the end—nothing.

A lifetime of busyness, pursuing and grasping, only to discover that many things we thought we could keep disappear like vapor slipping through our fingers.

Ecclesiastes is not telling us to do nothing. Rather, it reminds us:

Do not spend your whole life busy steaming something that will eventually vanish into mist.

What truly matters in life is not simply how much we possess, accomplish, or experience, but whether there is eternal weight in what we are living for.

After exploring wealth, pleasure, wisdom, and labor, the Teacher finally comes back to a simple conclusion:

“Fear God and keep his commandments.”
— Ecclesiastes 12:13

The steamer may be empty.
Life itself may become nothing more than vapor.

But when our lives return to the One who created us, we begin to understand:

what is merely mist,
and what is truly worth putting into this life.
