做了,就应该得到;
佣人做事,得到的是酬劳;
酬劳,是做了以后应得的;
“Not by Works, but by Grace”
September 9, 2026 | Devotional Scripture: Romans 11:6
“If it is by grace, then it is no longer by works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.”
— Romans 11:6
We easily bring the logic of the world into our relationship with God:
If we work, we expect to receive;
if we give, we expect something in return.
But Paul says:
“If it is by grace, then it is no longer by works.”
It is like a household with both a servant and a son.
The servant works because he is employed. When he completes his work, he receives the agreed wages. They are what he has earned.
The son may also work in the house and take on responsibilities, but he does not work to earn his identity as a son.
The servant works and receives wages;
the son works because he belongs to the family.
Romans 4:4 also says:
“Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation.”
This is the difference between wages and grace.
Wages are earned and therefore owed;
grace is not given because we deserve it—it is freely given by God.
We pray, serve, give, and do good not to earn God’s love, but because in Christ we have already received grace and have been accepted.
So works still matter, but the order is different:
We do not work to earn grace;
we live out good works because we have received grace.
The servant can say:
“I have completed my work; these are the wages I have earned.”
But the son knows:
“I do not work to earn my father’s love. This is my father’s house, and I belong here.”
Today, let us no longer approach God with the heart of a servant, but come before our Heavenly Father with the identity of His children.
We do not strive to earn His love;
we willingly respond because we are already loved.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for freely giving us Your grace. Help me not to come before You relying on my own merit, but to draw near to You as Your child.
Let me obey because I am loved, serve because I have received grace, and let my life bear the fruit of Your grace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
