Back to First Love
Devotion for May 21, 2026
“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” — Revelation 2:4
Sometimes, we have not walked away from faith. We still attend church, serve, pray, and continue doing what is right. To others, everything may seem fine. But the Lord does not only look at outward actions—He looks at the heart.
The church in Ephesus was not without strengths. They were hardworking, patient, faithful to truth, and able to discern error. Yet the Lord said: “You have forsaken your first love.” He was not saying, “You have not done enough.” He was gently pointing out: “Your heart has drifted from Me.”
First love is that simple devotion we had when we first knew Him. A prayer could move us to tears. A worship song could deeply touch us. Reading Scripture felt like hearing the voice of the One we love most. Back then, we drew near not out of duty, but out of love.
But over time, love can be covered by busyness, worn down by weariness, or frozen by hurt. We may still do spiritual things, yet lose spiritual warmth. We may still work for the Lord, yet forget to walk with Him.
But thank God—His correction is not rejection. It is a loving invitation. He is not saying, “You are too far gone.” He is simply saying: “Come back.”
Perhaps today, the Lord is not asking how much you have done. He is gently asking: “Do you still love Me?”
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, if I have become busy doing many things while slowly losing my first love for You, please forgive me. Bring me back to that simple place of loving You. Melt my weariness, heal my wounds, and awaken my sleeping heart. Let me not only work for You, but truly walk with You. Today, I choose to return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
