Receive First, Then Be Entrusted

Scripture:

John 21:15

“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’”

When reading this passage, many people focus on Jesus asking Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Yet it is easy to overlook the simple phrase that comes just before it:

“When they had finished eating.”

This is not an insignificant detail. It reveals the heart of Jesus.

Peter had experienced failure by denying Jesus three times. The disciples had also spent an entire night fishing without catching anything. Yet after His resurrection, Jesus did not immediately rebuke them or begin talking about their mission. Instead, He lovingly prepared a charcoal fire with bread and fish and invited them to eat breakfast together.

Jesus supplied their needs before entrusting them with responsibility. He restored the relationship before restoring the mission.

Only after breakfast did Jesus ask Peter, “Do you love Me?” Then He entrusted him with the responsibility of shepherding His flock.

This reminds us that ministry does not begin with responsibility—it begins with love. It is not about giving first, but about receiving first.

Today, we can easily become busy serving and fulfilling God’s work while forgetting to first sit in His presence and receive His love, His peace, and His provision.

Only those who have first been fed by the Lord can feed others. Only those who have first experienced His restoration can become instruments of restoration for others.

May we come to the Lord’s table each day, enjoy fellowship with Him, receive the Bread of Life, and then go forth in His love to fulfill the calling He has entrusted to us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for always restoring me with Your love instead of condemning me when I am weak. Help me to come into Your presence each day and receive Your provision before responding to Your calling. May I never serve in my own strength, but love others with Your love and nourish lives with the life You have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
