Put On the New Self, Live in the Image of Christ

Devotional – July 11, 2026

Scripture:

“Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

— Colossians 3:9–10

At the end of a long day, we naturally take off our dirty, sweaty clothes and put on clean ones after a shower. No one would choose to put the dirty clothes back on, because they no longer fit who we are at that moment.

Paul uses this picture to remind us that when we come to Christ, we have already taken off the old self and put on the new self.

The old self represents our former way of living—marked by lies, anger, selfishness, jealousy, and the bondage of sin. The new self is the new life God has given us, a life that learns to walk in truth, holiness, humility, compassion, and love.

Yet putting on the new self is not a one-time act. It is a daily choice.

When we are misunderstood, we choose honesty instead of deception. When we are hurt, we choose forgiveness instead of bitterness. When temptation comes, we choose obedience instead of returning to old habits. Every one of these choices is another step in putting on the new self.

Paul also says that the new self “is being renewed in knowledge.” This is not simply about gaining more information. It is about knowing God more deeply, understanding His heart, and allowing His Word to transform our thoughts, values, and way of life so that we become more like Christ.

At the same time, we all experience moments of weakness. Sometimes we say things we later regret. Sometimes our temper gets the better of us. Sometimes we slip back into old patterns.

Thankfully, Paul does not say that if we fall, we are no longer the new self. Instead, he reminds us that the new self is being renewed. Spiritual growth is a process, not an overnight transformation.

Every time we return to the Lord in repentance, every time we surrender our own way, and every time we choose to obey Him again, we are taking off the old self and putting on the new. The Holy Spirit does not abandon us because of our failures. He faithfully strengthens us to continue growing.

God is not asking us to wear a religious mask. He is transforming us from the inside out, restoring us to the image in which He created us. True maturity is not never falling—it is returning to God’s grace every time we do, getting back up, and continuing to walk with Him.

Today, ask yourself:

Am I wearing the clothes of the old self, or the new self?

Even if you have failed today, do not lose heart. God’s mercies are new every morning. He will not give up on you because of your weakness. Through the Holy Spirit, He continues to renew you day by day, making you more like Christ. Real transformation comes not by our own strength, but by God’s renewing grace.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me new life through Jesus Christ. Help me each day to take off the old self and put on the new. When I am weak and fall, do not let me remain in defeat. Give me a heart that is quick to repent and the strength to rise again. Renew my mind through Your Word, and make me more like Christ each day, so that I may live a life that reflects Your love, holiness, and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
