No Longer Driven by the World’s Tests, but Moving Forward in God’s Calling

Date: 10 October 2026 (Saturday)

Scripture: 1 Kings 19:11–12 (KJV)

“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”

Devotional | From Proving Ourselves to Moving Forward in Dependence on God

Life often feels like an endless series of examinations. From education and careers to different stages of life, we are accustomed to measuring our worth through results, abilities, and achievements. After passing one test, another awaits, as though we must constantly prove ourselves.

Looking back at Elijah’s life, he too went through countless tests.

By the Brook Cherith, he learned to wait upon God’s provision. In the widow’s home at Zarephath, his faith was tested in times of scarcity. On Mount Carmel, he courageously confronted the prophets of Baal and witnessed God’s fire falling from heaven. Yet after such a great spiritual victory, Elijah fled from Jezebel’s threats and fell into exhaustion, fear, and discouragement.

Even someone who had endured many trials and witnessed mighty miracles could still experience weakness.

When Elijah arrived at Mount Horeb, God did not demand that he recreate the glory of Mount Carmel. Nor did God require him to prove himself through another extraordinary demonstration.

A mighty wind, an earthquake, and a fire came one after another. Yet God spoke to Elijah through a still small voice.

God was not calling Elijah to remain trapped in his past successes or failures. Instead, He invited Elijah to listen again, receive a renewed assignment, and continue moving forward.

God did not cancel Elijah’s calling; He redirected Elijah’s steps according to His purpose.

This is also a lesson we need to learn in our own lives.

The world’s examinations never seem to end, but we no longer need to be driven by comparison, competition, or the desire for human approval.

No longer running to prove ourselves does not mean giving up effort. Depending on God does not mean avoiding responsibility.

True faith grows as we pass through life’s many trials and increasingly understand that what matters most is not proving how strong we are, but faithfully responding to God’s calling.

In the past, we may have relied on our own strength to pursue success. Now, we learn to depend on God and walk faithfully with Him. Where we once sought people’s approval, we now desire above all to walk in His will.

Today’s Reflection

Am I still being driven by one worldly examination after another, constantly trying to prove my worth? Or have I learned to quiet my heart, listen to God’s voice, and move forward according to His leading?

God does not call us to stop running, but to change the direction of our race. He does not call us to escape life’s tests, but to learn to depend on Him through them.

After passing through countless tests, the greatest lesson in life is not learning how to prove ourselves, but learning how to depend completely on God and faithfully finish the race He has set before us.
