God Has Not Forgotten Uriah — He Remembers Every Faithful Heart

Scripture: 2 Samuel 23:8–39

“Uriah the Hittite. There were thirty-seven in all.” (2 Samuel 23:39)

Devotional Reflection

2 Samuel 23 records the names of David’s mighty warriors. These men stood beside David in battle, remained faithful through hardship, and courageously risked their lives in service to the kingdom of Israel.

Yet one detail is particularly striking. The very last name mentioned on this list of mighty warriors is Uriah the Hittite.

Uriah was one of David’s loyal warriors. Yet because of David’s sin, he was deliberately placed at the fiercest point of battle, where he eventually lost his life (2 Samuel 11).

David betrayed Uriah, but God did not forget him.

From a human perspective, Uriah’s life seemed to end in a tragic act of injustice. Yet Scripture not only records what happened to him but also preserves his name among David’s mighty warriors.

This reminds us that human injustice cannot erase a person’s faithfulness, and human forgetfulness cannot erase what God has seen.

Even more strikingly, in Matthew 1:6, when recording the genealogy of Jesus, Scripture refers to Bathsheba not by her name, but as “Uriah’s wife.”

Even in the genealogy of kings, Uriah is remembered. His name reminds us not only of his faithfulness but also of David’s sin.

God forgave David when he repented, but He did not erase the truth of what had happened.

Today, we too may experience misunderstanding, betrayal, or moments when our sacrifices seem to go unnoticed.

But Uriah’s story reminds us:

God remembers our faithfulness, and He sees every injustice we endure. His grace does not conceal the truth, and His justice does not bend before human power or position.

Today’s Reflection

Do I believe that God remembers my faithfulness, even when no one else notices?

When I am entrusted with authority or influence, do I value and honour those who serve faithfully behind the scenes?

People may forget, and history may fall silent, but God has not forgotten Uriah. Neither will He overlook a single life lived in faithfulness.
