Return to the Source and Find New Strength

Scripture: Lamentations 5:21

“Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old.”

Devotional Reflection

A man’s design was stolen, and the person who stole it then accused him of plagiarism. Deeply hurt, he became consumed by the dispute and gradually lost the joy of creating.

A wise man told him, “You can stop updating that design, so the other person can no longer draw new ideas from your work. Begin again. Your design has been taken, but your ability to create is still within you.”

Those words opened his eyes. He had been holding so tightly to what was taken that he had forgotten he could still create. To begin again, he needed to turn his attention away from the dispute and return to his creative work.

This brings us to the prayer: “Restore us to yourself … renew our days.”

After Jerusalem was destroyed, the people lost their homes, and their former way of life lay in ruins. In their sorrow, they cried out to God to bring them back to Him. Their deepest need was the restoration of their relationship with God. He remained the source of their life and hope.

The man in the story needed to pick up his pencil again; we need to turn again to the God who gives us life. When we are hurt, we can become so focused on what we have lost that resentment fills our hearts. Yet this verse leads us to cry out amid our brokenness: “Restore us to yourself.”

“Renew our days” expresses a longing to experience once more the grace of walking with God. Even when some losses cannot be recovered, God can renew our hearts and give us strength to keep loving, keep trusting, and keep moving forward.

Today’s Reflection

Have I become distant from God because I am holding on to past hurts? May I turn to Him today and find fresh strength in His presence to move forward.
