1 Kings 15:23
“As for all the other events of Asa’s reign, all his achievements, all he did, and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? In his old age, however, his feet became diseased.”
Asa was a king who feared God.
He led the people to remove idols,
restore worship,
and trust in God during times of great danger.
Yet in his later years,
he gradually began to rely on his own wisdom and methods.
When difficulties arose,
he no longer sought the Lord as he once had,
but depended more on human help and his own experience.
Eventually,
he developed a severe disease in his feet.
2 Chronicles tells us:
“Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from the physicians.”
Scripture is not condemning doctors.
Rather, it reminds us that while we may seek human help,
we must never neglect seeking God.
Many of us begin our journey with deep faith,
experiencing God’s guidance and grace.
But as we gain experience,
resources,
and confidence,
we may slowly begin to rely more on ourselves than on Him.
Asa’s life reminds us:
Starting well is important, but finishing well is equally important.
What God values is not merely our past experiences,
but whether we continue to trust Him today.
May we, whether young or old,
in times of blessing or difficulty,
maintain a simple heart of dependence on God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for faithfully guiding my steps throughout my life. Please guard my feet and keep me walking in Your ways. Whether the road ahead is smooth or difficult, help me to follow You closely and not rely on my own understanding.
Lord, strengthen my steps so that I may run the race You have set before me without growing weary and walk in obedience to Your will without turning back. May I not only have passion at the beginning, but remain faithful until the day I see You face to face.
Establish my feet firmly in Your truth. Help me finish the race, keep the faith, and follow You to the very end. By Your grace, may I finish well.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
