Wearing the Warriors’ Worn Shoes

Devotional – June 3, 2026

1 Chronicles 12:38

“All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king.”

This morning, I had a dream.

In the dream, a group of us were traveling together.

Someone gave me a pair of old shoes.

They were not new, yet they were still in very good condition.

The moment I put them on, I felt strength come into my feet. Walking became easier, steadier, and more powerful.

As I reflected on the dream, I thought about David’s mighty men in 1 Chronicles 12.

When these warriors arrived at Hebron, they were not inexperienced recruits.

They had followed David through wilderness seasons.

They had endured hardship, uncertainty, opposition, and long periods of waiting.

They stood with David before the kingdom was established.

They had been tested by battles, refined by trials, and strengthened through perseverance.

They became mighty men not because they were naturally strong, but because they had been refined.

Their faith had been tested.

Their loyalty had been tested.

Their character had been tested.

Their unity had been tested.

If we picture them in the language of the dream, they were not wearing brand-new shoes.

They were wearing shoes that had crossed mountains, wilderness paths, and battlefields.

Shoes marked by experience.

Shoes proven through hardship.

Shoes tested and found reliable.

The old shoes in the dream therefore spoke to me of spiritual inheritance.

It was as though God was saying:

“Do not overlook the footsteps of those who have been refined before you.”

True strength is often found in lives that have been tested.

New shoes may look impressive.

Old shoes know how to walk difficult roads.

New shoes have not yet been proven.

Old shoes carry the testimony of God’s faithfulness.

That is why, when I put on those shoes in the dream, strength entered my feet.

The shoes seemed to represent more than footwear.

They represented tested faith, proven loyalty, steadfast endurance, and spiritual inheritance passed down from those who had gone before.

What stood out even more was that I was not walking alone.

A group of us were traveling together.

This reflects the picture in 1 Chronicles 12.

Men from different tribes gathered with one heart and one purpose.

Though they came from different backgrounds and possessed different gifts, they moved forward together.

1 Chronicles 12:33

“They were ready for battle and able to keep rank; they were not of double heart.”

God is not merely looking for gifted people.

God is looking for people who remain faithful after being refined.

God is looking for people who can lay aside self-interest and walk in unity with others.

When such people come together, His purposes move forward.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the faithful men and women who have gone before us and left behind footprints of faith.

Help me to value the spiritual inheritance You have entrusted to Your people.

Teach me to wear the warriors’ worn shoes and learn from their faith, perseverance, obedience, and loyalty.

Make Your people one in heart and purpose, standing together without divided motives.

May we be like the warriors of 1 Chronicles 12—refined through trials, yet remaining wholehearted in following You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
