Praying for All People

Devotional Sharing — July 14, 2026

Scripture

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
— 1 Timothy 2:1–2

The very first exhortation Paul gives to Timothy is not about ministry methods, nor about church growth, but this: “First of all, pray for all people.”

The word “first” here is not only about sequence; it speaks of priority. Prayer is not something we do only when we have no other options left. It is the most important thing we do before we begin anything else.

Paul highlights four kinds of prayer:

  • Petitions — urgently asking God to meet people’s needs.
  • Prayers — worship, communion, and drawing near to God.
  • Intercession — standing in someone else’s place and crying out to God on their behalf.
  • Thanksgiving — giving thanks for the grace God has already given, and for what He will accomplish.

He then emphasizes praying for kings and all who are in authority. Whether or not we agree with their decisions, Scripture reminds us to bring them before God, because the choices made by those in power often affect the entire nation and society.

When a nation is stable and society is orderly, people are less affected by chaos and conflict. This allows the gospel to spread more freely, and believers can live godly, upright, and peaceful lives, fulfilling the mission God has entrusted to them.

This reminds us that our prayers should not remain only within the boundaries of our own families, work, and personal needs. We are called to widen our vision—praying for the church, the nation, leaders, society, and even those who do not yet know the Lord.

It is like a ship sailing across the ocean. The passengers may have different rooms and different tasks, but if the captain steers well, everyone on board benefits. Many silently hope the captain will have wisdom and sound judgment. In the same way, when we pray for those in authority, we are not praying only for them personally, but for everyone living on this land.

God calls us to be intercessors in this generation. A person who is willing to kneel and pray often influences the world far more than we imagine, because God accomplishes His purposes through the prayers of His people.

Meditation for Today

Are my prayers today centered only on my own needs, or am I also willing to intercede for all people—for the nation, for leaders, and for the spread of the gospel?
