Fan the Flame Anew
Devotional – July 15, 2026
Scripture:
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of self-control.”
— 2 Timothy 1:6–7
Second Timothy is the final letter Paul wrote before his death. Imprisoned and aware that his earthly journey was coming to an end, Paul did not focus on his own suffering. Instead, he was concerned for the young Timothy, encouraging him not to lose heart or shrink back in the face of growing persecution and opposition.
Paul reminded Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God.”
The phrase “fan into flame” carries the picture of stirring glowing embers back into a blazing fire. In ancient times, people had to regularly stir the coals and add fresh wood so the fire would continue burning. Left unattended, the fire would not go out immediately, but it would slowly fade until only warm ashes remained.
Our spiritual lives can be much the same.
God has given each of us different gifts. Some are gifted in serving, others in encouraging, teaching, showing mercy, or leading. Yet when we become overwhelmed by busyness, discouraged by setbacks, or afraid of what others may think, we may stop using the gifts God has entrusted to us. The fire begins to grow dim.
Often, it is not that the gift has disappeared—it is simply that the fire has not been tended.
Paul then continues:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of self-control.”
Fear causes us to hesitate. It makes us afraid of failure, rejection, or feeling inadequate. But the Holy Spirit produces something entirely different:
- Power — the courage to keep moving forward even in difficult circumstances.
- Love — serving not to prove ourselves, but out of genuine love for God and for others.
- Self-control — a disciplined and steady mind that is not ruled by fear, emotions, or changing circumstances.
These qualities do not come merely through human determination; they are the work of the Holy Spirit within us.
Just as a fireplace can burst into flame again when the embers are stirred and fresh wood is added, God can rekindle the fire within us when we come back to Him.
Today, God is calling us not to live on yesterday’s experiences or yesterday’s grace. Instead, He invites us to come before Him daily and allow the Holy Spirit to fan the flame within us once again.
Reflection:
Have I allowed busyness, discouragement, or fear to quiet the gifts God has placed within me? Am I willing to come before Him again today and let Him rekindle the fire, so that I may faithfully fulfill the purpose He has entrusted to me?
