Charged to My Account
Devotional – July 17, 2026
Scripture:
“If he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it.”
— Philemon 1:18–19
The book of Philemon is a beautiful picture of God’s grace. Onesimus, once a slave to Philemon, had likely wronged his master or owed him a debt. After meeting Paul, he came to faith in Christ and his life was transformed. Rather than allowing him to avoid his past, Paul encouraged him to return and personally assured Philemon:
“If he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge it to my account. I will repay it.”
These simple words beautifully capture the heart of the Gospel.
This is exactly what Jesus Christ has done for us. Because of sin, every one of us stands indebted before God with a debt we could never repay. Yet Jesus stood before the Father as if to say:
“Charge all of their debt to My account. I will pay it in full.”
At the cross, He bore our sins and paid the price we could never pay, reconciling us to God through His sacrifice.
Paul’s willingness to bear Onesimus’ debt reminds us that genuine love is more than words—it is a love willing to pay the price to restore broken relationships.
Paul then gently reminded Philemon, “You owe me even your own self.” He was not demanding a favor but reminding Philemon that he too had received the grace of the Gospel. Having freely received God’s mercy, he was now called to extend that same grace to another.
Today, we are all like Onesimus—redeemed by grace and purchased at a great price. May we never forget that Christ has taken our debt upon Himself. And because we have received such amazing grace, may we also become people who forgive, restore, and bring reconciliation to others.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for not treating me according to my sins, but for taking my debt upon Yourself and paying the full price with Your life. Help me to remember Your amazing grace every day. Give me a heart that is willing to forgive, accept, and restore others, so that I may reflect the power of the Gospel and become an instrument of Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
