Longing for the Pure Spiritual Milk
Devotional – July 20, 2026
Scripture:
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”
— 1 Peter 2:2 (NIV)
A healthy newborn baby does not need to be reminded when it is time to drink milk. When hungry, the baby instinctively longs for its mother’s milk because it is the source of life and growth.
Peter tells us that our spiritual life is much the same. A person who has been born again will naturally develop a hunger for God’s Word, for it is the nourishment that sustains spiritual life.
The “pure spiritual milk” refers to the pure, unadulterated Word of God. His Word does more than increase our knowledge—it feeds our souls, renews our minds, and strengthens our faith day by day.
Just as a baby does not grow overnight but through daily nourishment, spiritual maturity is also a lifelong journey. We do not become mature believers after reading the Bible once. Instead, we grow as we spend time with God each day, meditate on His Word, and obey what He says.
Peter writes, “so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” Spiritual growth is a continuous process. God does not expect instant maturity; He desires faithful hearts that continually come to His Word and allow Him to shape us into the likeness of Christ.
Today, ask yourself this question:
What do I hunger for most each day? The ever-changing information of this world, or the unchanging Word of God?
May we, like newborn babies, continually crave the pure spiritual milk of God’s Word. As we feed on His truth each day, may our faith grow stronger and our lives increasingly reflect the character of Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me a heart that longs for Your Word. Do not let the voices of this world drown out Your voice. May Your Word be my daily nourishment, strengthening my faith and transforming me into the likeness of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
