Returning to the Starting Point

Devotional – August 3, 2026

Scripture

Ruth 1:16

But Ruth replied, “Do not urge me to leave you or to turn back from following you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”

One morning, while I was asleep, I clearly heard a voice in my heart say,

“In another thirty minutes, it will be seven o’clock.”

When I woke up, I immediately checked the time. It was exactly 6:29.

June 29 (6/29) is my birthday.

At that moment, I sensed that God was bringing me back to the very first day of my life on earth.

As I looked ahead to 7:00, I was reminded of a meaningful play on words in Chinese. The phrase “seven o’clock” (七点, qī diǎn) sounds almost the same as “starting point” (起点, qǐ diǎn). It felt like a gentle reminder from God that this was not an ending, but a new beginning—not a time to remain in the past, but an invitation to step forward into a new season.

The Book of Ruth is, in many ways, a story about returning to the starting point.

Naomi left the Promised Land because of a famine and settled in Moab, hoping to build a better life there. Instead, she experienced heartbreaking loss. She lost her husband, and later both of her sons. She had left with hope, but returned with grief and empty hands.

Life often feels the same.

We pursue better opportunities only to encounter disappointment. We think our journey has come to an end, when in reality God is preparing to begin a new chapter.

At her darkest moment, Naomi made one crucial decision—to return.

She left Moab and went back to Bethlehem, and Ruth chose to follow her with unwavering faith.

To human eyes, it was simply a journey home.

But in God’s eyes, it marked the beginning of His redemptive plan.

It was in Bethlehem that Ruth met Boaz. There she received a new identity, a new family, and became part of the lineage through which the Messiah would come.

So often, God does not begin by changing our circumstances.

Instead, He first brings us back to the place He has prepared for us. When we are willing to return to Him, He begins to unfold something new in our lives.

That morning, as I saw 6:29 and reflected on 7:00—the “starting point”, I sensed the Lord reminding me not to remain bound by yesterday, whether by its successes or its failures.

Every day can be a new beginning.

Everyone who responds to God’s invitation can begin again.

What matters most is not what happened yesterday, but whether today we are willing, like Ruth, to take a step of faith and follow wherever God leads.

To others, it may seem that you are simply going back to where you started.

But in God’s eyes, you are not returning to the past.

You are stepping into a brand-new beginning.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for reminding me that every day is a new beginning You have prepared for me. Help me not to be bound by yesterday’s successes or failures, and give me courage to face the unknown future. Grant me a heart like Ruth’s—faithful, humble, and willing to follow wherever You lead. May my life continually return to You and move forward into every new beginning You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
