Give Them Another Chance
Devotional – August 4, 2026
Scripture
1 Samuel 22:2
“All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.” (NIV)
⸻
The military camp was having its annual cleanup.
Behind the storage area stood a row of old trash bins. Some were bent out of shape, some had broken wheels, and others were badly worn. They had all been marked for disposal.
A commanding officer walked by, took one look, and said,
“Replace them all with new ones.”
Just as the workers were about to remove them, a maintenance technician stepped forward.
“Sir, would you let me try repairing them first?”
The officer looked at him with surprise.
“Do you really think they’re worth fixing?”
The technician simply smiled and quietly wheeled each bin back to the workshop.
A few days later, the bins returned.
The dents had been repaired, the wheels replaced, and the faded surfaces repainted.
But something else had changed.
Each bin now carried a new label:
“Recycling Bin.”
The officer paused.
“Why did you rename them?”
The technician replied with a smile,
“Sir, these bins used to hold only trash. Now they’ll help others discover that even what people throw away can have value again.”
The officer stood silently, looking at the bins.
After a long pause, he nodded gently.
“I see… it’s not only trash that deserves another chance.”
“Sometimes people do, too.”
From that day on, a new tradition began in the camp.
Whenever someone made a mistake, fell behind, or seemed to have lost all potential, the officer would always say,
“Don’t write them off so quickly. Give them another chance.”
Because he never forgot those recycling bins.

When David fled to the cave of Adullam, the people who gathered around him were also those whom society had given up on.
They were distressed, burdened by debt, and discouraged. No one believed they had a future.
But David did not reject them.
More importantly, God did not give up on them.
In time, these very people became Israel’s mighty warriors.
God often does not call those who appear to be the most qualified.
Instead, He gives hope to those whom others have already counted out.
What seems worthless in human eyes may simply be a life that God has not yet finished shaping.
⸻
Prayer
Lord, thank You for never giving up on me.
When others saw only my failures, You saw the potential You placed within me.
Give me a heart like Yours—one that is slow to reject people, willing to give others another chance, and patient enough to walk with them as they grow.
Help me also to treasure every new beginning You graciously give me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
