Back to the Beginning — Renew Our Days
August 20, 2026 | Devotional on Lamentations
📖 Scripture
Lamentations 5:21
“Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old.”
Genesis 2:8
“Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden…”

✦ Devotional Reflection
“Renew our days as of old.”
The Hebrew word translated “of old” here is qedem (קֶדֶם), meaning “former times” or “ancient days.” In different contexts, the same Hebrew word can also mean “east” or “eastward.”
Interestingly, in Genesis 2:8, when Scripture speaks of the garden in Eden “eastward,” the word qedem also appears.
This gives us a beautiful devotional connection:
Could turning back to God also be a journey back to the beginning?
In the beginning, in Eden, there was no hiding or separation between humanity and God. Humanity lived in His presence and enjoyed the goodness of His creation.
Then sin entered the world. Humanity left Eden, and brokenness entered human life.
Against the backdrop of ruins, Lamentations cries out:
“Turn us to yourself.”
True revival is not merely the restoration of our circumstances. It is not simply a return to better days in the past. It is people returning to God Himself.
From Eden in Genesis to the reappearance of the tree of life in Revelation, the whole Bible reveals a great story of restoration:
Creation → Loss → Return → Renewal → Restored Presence
So the words “as of old” can also lead our hearts to look even further back—to the beginning:
to the original goodness of creation, and to the relationship in which there was no separation between humanity and God.
Back to qedem.
Back to the beginning.
Back to His presence.
Let Him renew our days.
Not simply back to yesterday,
but back to the goodness He intended for us from the beginning.
