我也怎样对他;

「以眼还眼,以牙还牙」原本是为了限制报复;

你可以选择温柔;

你可以选择不报复;

祂被辱骂,却不还口;
祂受害,却不说威吓的话;

不要让别人的恶,决定你的回应;

Don’t Let Other People’s Evil Determine Your Response

September 4, 2026 | Devotional Scripture: Matthew 5:38–39

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”
— Matthew 5:38–39

Our natural instinct is to fight back when we are hurt.

If someone treats us badly,
we want to treat them the same way.
If someone says something hurtful to us,
we may want to respond with something even harsher.

But Jesus says:

“Do not resist an evil person.”

This does not mean that we should tolerate evil, nor does it mean that we cannot protect ourselves when we face injustice.

Jesus is addressing something deeper—our hearts.

Do not let retaliation become our response.

“Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth” was originally given to limit retaliation. But Jesus calls us to something higher:

We do not have to return the hurt that others have given us.

When Jesus says that if someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other cheek also, it is not because you are weak.

It is because you refuse to allow another person’s actions to control your life.

Others may choose how they treat you,
but in Christ,
you can still choose how you respond.

When others respond to you with anger,
you can choose gentleness.

When others misunderstand you,
you can choose not to retaliate.

When others hurt you,
you can entrust judgment and vindication to God.

True victory is not saying, “At last, I paid them back.”

True victory is this:

Someone may have hurt me,
but they cannot turn me into a person filled with bitterness and revenge.

Jesus Himself is our perfect example.

When He was insulted, He did not retaliate.
When He suffered, He made no threats.
Instead, He entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly.

Perhaps today someone has made you feel deeply wronged,
or perhaps certain words still remain painfully in your heart.

The Lord invites you to place them into His hands.

This does not mean denying the hurt.
It means refusing to allow that hurt to continue ruling your heart.

Don’t let other people’s evil determine your response;
let the love of Christ within you determine your response.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
when I am hurt, misunderstood, or offended, guard my heart.

Help me not to repay evil with evil, and do not allow bitterness or revenge to take root within me.

Give me wisdom to know when I need to set healthy boundaries, and give me the grace to forgive and entrust vindication into Your hands.

May I not be controlled by the actions of others,
but be led by Your love.

Help me overcome evil with good, respond to hurt with love, and live in the freedom that belongs to those who are in Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
