There Is Still Land to Possess — Give Me This Mountain
October 5, 2026 | Monday
Scripture
Joshua 13:1
“When Joshua had grown old, the LORD said to him, ‘You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.’”
Joshua 14:12
“Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day… The LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
Devotional
God said to the aging Joshua:
“There is still much land to possess.”
This was not a rebuke. God was showing Joshua that although he had entered a new season of life, God’s purpose was not finished.
Joshua’s role was beginning to change. He did not have to fight every remaining battle himself. He was now to distribute the inheritance and allow others to rise up and possess what God had promised.
Then, in the very next chapter, eighty-five-year-old Caleb stepped forward.
When he heard that there was still land to possess, his response was not:
“I am already old. Let the younger generation do it.”
Instead, he said:
“Give me this mountain!”
What makes this even more remarkable is that this mountain would not be easy to possess. The Anakites were still there, and the cities were large and fortified.
But Caleb did not focus on the giants. Neither did he focus on his age.
He remembered the promise God had given him forty-five years earlier.
His confidence was not simply:
“I am still strong enough.”
His confidence was:
“The LORD will be with me.”
That was Caleb’s secret.
Forty-five years of waiting had not weakened his faith. At eighty-five, his calling had not retired.
God said:
“There is still much land to possess.”
Caleb responded:
“Give me this mountain.”
Today’s Reflection
As we enter different seasons of life, it is easy to calculate how much time, strength, or ability we have left.
But perhaps there is a more important question:
What has God entrusted to me that is still unfinished?
We may no longer move forward in exactly the same way as before. Our roles may change, but as long as God continues to lead us, there is still something new to receive and possess.
True faith does not say:
“I am still young, so I can do it.”
True faith says:
“If the Lord is with me, I am still willing to go.”
When God shows us that there is still land to possess, may we have the heart of Caleb:
Not retreating because of age,
not giving up because of waiting,
not fearing because of giants,
and not allowing difficulties to diminish God’s promise.
Lord, among all the land that is still to be possessed, which mountain are You calling me to take?
If this is what You have promised—give me this mountain.
