没有传承,神仍然可以兴起人;
When the Baton Pass Has a Gap—God Is Still Looking for the Next Generation
October 6, 2026
Today’s Scripture
Judges 2:10, 16
“After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel.”
“Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders.”
Devotional Reflection
Before Moses died, God had already prepared Joshua.
Moses knew that he could not lead the Israelites forever. Therefore, he did not merely complete his own mission; he also prepared the next person to continue moving forward.
Moses → Joshua was a clear passing of the baton.
However, when we come to the Book of Judges, we see a very different picture.
After Joshua and that entire generation had passed away, the Bible says:
“Another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD.”
They inherited the Promised Land, but they did not continue living in the previous generation’s genuine knowledge of God.
From that point onward, the Book of Judges repeatedly presents the same cycle:
The people turned away from God → they fell into the hands of their enemies → they cried out to God → God raised up a judge → they were delivered → after the judge died, the people turned away again.
Thus, we see God raising up Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah, Samson, and others…
One judge after another was raised up by God, yet we rarely see a clear and sustained pattern of spiritual succession like the way Moses prepared Joshua.
This is what makes the Book of Judges so thought-provoking:
Every generation had people whom God raised up,
but there was no stable generational succession.
So the question is not merely, “Are there leaders?”
It is:
Have we prepared the next generation?
God can continually raise people up. But if every generation has to start over in the midst of a crisis, it shows that the God experienced by the previous generation has not become the God personally known by the next generation.
This also causes us to rethink what a true hand over really means.
Passing the baton is not merely handing over a position,
nor simply arranging the ministry,
nor merely telling the next person, “This is how things should be done.”
True succession means helping the next generation understand:
Why do we do this?
Who called us?
Whom do we serve?
Methods can be learned, positions can be filled, and experience can be passed on, but every generation must personally know God.
The Book of Judges teaches us a profound lesson:
Without succession, God can still raise people up;
but with succession, the next generation does not have to start over from a gap every time.
Today’s Reflection
Am I doing what I do today merely to run my own leg of the race well?
Or am I also asking: Who will run the next leg?
Moses did not merely complete his mission; he also prepared Joshua.
The Book of Judges reminds us that if we only complete our own work but fail to bring the next generation before God, a spiritual gap may appear after we are gone.
True succession is not merely handing over the “baton” in our hands,
but helping the next generation know the God who entrusted the mission to us.
Do not merely be a judge for this generation;
prepare the next generation to continue following God.
