The Fall of Saul — From God’s Calling to Losing His Kingdom
Date: 8 October 2026 (Thursday)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:22–23
“To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.” (NIV)
Devotional Reflection
Saul was Israel’s first king. He began with humility, was chosen and anointed by God, and experienced the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. Yet his downfall did not happen overnight. It began with repeated acts of disobedience.
In 1 Samuel 13, Saul became impatient and fearful when his soldiers began to scatter. Instead of waiting for Samuel, he took matters into his own hands and offered the sacrifice.
In chapter 15, Saul again failed to fully obey God’s command. Rather than taking responsibility, he tried to justify his actions. He eventually admitted, “I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.” (1 Samuel 15:24)
Later, jealousy drove Saul to pursue David relentlessly. When God no longer answered him, Saul even turned to a medium for guidance. Eventually, his life ended tragically on the battlefield.
Saul’s greatest failure was not a lack of ability, but the gradual loss of a heart that feared and obeyed God.
David also committed serious sins. However, when confronted by the prophet Nathan, he acknowledged his wrongdoing and repented. The difference between Saul and David was not that one was sinless, but how each responded when confronted with sin.
Being called is an act of grace; obedience is our response. Beginning well is a blessing, but remaining faithful to the end matters even more.
Today’s Reflection
Are we sometimes like Saul—beginning with a willing heart, but gradually allowing circumstances, people’s opinions, and our own desires to influence our obedience to God?
God is not concerned merely with how much we do for Him, but whether we continue to listen to His voice and follow His ways.
True spiritual success is not measured by position, recognition, or achievements, but by a heart that remains faithful and obedient to God until the very end.
