People May Forget, but God Never Does

Scripture:

“In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm.” (Ezra 1:1)

“But the eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped.” (Ezra 5:5)

Devotional Reflection:

Human beings are forgetful. We easily forget the blessings we have received, the promises we have made, and even the ways God has faithfully led us in the past. Yet God never forgets a single word He has spoken, nor does He forget those He loves.

The Israelites had spent seventy years in exile. The temple lay in ruins, and Jerusalem was devastated. As the years passed and generations changed, many may have thought that God’s promises had become nothing more than distant memories. Yet the Book of Ezra begins with a powerful declaration: God stirred the heart of King Cyrus to fulfill the word He had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah.

People may forget, time may pass, and circumstances may change, but God’s promises never expire.

Even more beautifully, when the people encountered opposition while rebuilding the temple, Scripture declares that “the eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews.” This reminds us that God not only remembers His promises from the past but also watches over those who continue to wait and persevere today.

Sometimes, the love we give, the service we quietly offer, and the tears we shed may go unnoticed or be forgotten by others. But before God, no act of faithfulness is forgotten, and no step of perseverance taken in faith is ever in vain.

Human memory is limited, but God’s faithfulness is eternal. People may forget what we have done, but God always remembers the hearts we have devoted to Him.

Today’s Reflection:

Do not question the value of what you have given simply because others fail to remember. Neither should you assume that God has forgotten simply because His promises have not yet been fulfilled.

People may forget, but God never does. What He has promised, He will fulfill according to His perfect timing and purpose.
