Building with One Hand, Battling with the Other

Date: October 15, 2026

Scripture: Nehemiah 4:16–18

“Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other.” (Nehemiah 4:17)

Devotional Reflection

When Nehemiah led the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, they faced threats and opposition from their enemies. Yet Nehemiah did not allow the battles to stop the building, nor did he become so focused on the work that he neglected to remain watchful. He assigned half the people to work while the other half stood guard. Even those rebuilding the walls carried swords at their sides as they continued fulfilling the mission God had entrusted to them.

This presents a powerful spiritual picture: Building with one hand, battling with the other.

Building represents responding to God’s calling, restoring His divine purposes, and establishing strong spiritual foundations. Battling represents standing against the enemy’s opposition through prayer, truth, and faith while carrying out God’s work.

Doing God’s work does not mean we will face no battles. Rather, it means remaining faithful to His calling even in the midst of spiritual warfare.

It is also significant that a trumpet blower stood beside Nehemiah. Whenever danger approached, the sound of the trumpet gathered the people to stand together against the enemy. This reminds us that spiritual building is never meant to be a solitary journey. We need one another to remain watchful, united, and steadfast in faith.

True victory is not merely defeating the enemy, but completing the work God has entrusted to us in the midst of the battle.

Today’s Reflection

Have we allowed the battles before us to stop us from building? Or have we become so occupied with serving that we have lost our spiritual alertness?

As we enter a new season, may we hold firmly to God’s Word with one hand and faithfully build with the other. May we remain watchful in prayer, move forward in faith, and persevere until the work God has entrusted to us is completed.
