Seeing the Unseen
Devotional – August 7, 2026
Scripture
“Do not be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
And Elisha prayed, “LORD, open his eyes so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
— 2 Kings 6:16–17

Devotional Reflection
A little girl was taking her first flight.
Soon after takeoff, the airplane entered a thick layer of dark clouds. Outside the window everything looked gray, and the aircraft shook continuously in the turbulence.
Feeling nervous, she held her mother’s hand tightly and asked,
“Is it always like this outside?”
Her mother gently pointed toward the window and said,
“Just wait a little longer.”
A few minutes later, the plane broke through the clouds. Suddenly, brilliant sunshine filled the sky, stretching endlessly above them.
The little girl exclaimed,
“So the sun has been there all along!”
Her mother smiled and replied,
“The sun never disappeared. The clouds were simply hiding it.”
Our lives are often like that.
When difficulties come, we easily focus only on the dark clouds before us. We may think God has left us or that there is no way forward.
In 2 Kings chapter 6, the king of Aram sent a great army to surround the city of Dothan in order to capture Elisha.
Early the next morning, Elisha’s servant saw the enemy forces surrounding them and cried out in fear,
“Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?”
But Elisha remained calm because he saw what his servant could not see.
He said,
“Do not be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Then he prayed,
“LORD, open his eyes so that he may see.”
Immediately, God opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire surrounding and protecting God’s servant.
The enemy army had not changed, nor had the circumstances immediately changed.
What changed was his perspective.
Many times, we need to pray the same prayer.
Instead of first asking God to change our circumstances, we should first ask Him to open our eyes so that we may see that He is still sovereign, still present, and still at work.
When we see God, we will no longer be consumed by our problems. When we trust Him, we will no longer be held captive by fear.

Reflection for Today
What determines whether we have peace is not our circumstances, but what we choose to see.
May the Lord open our eyes each day to see that His presence is greater than our fears, His power is greater than our difficulties, and His promises never fail.
When we see God, we can move forward with faith.
