Have I Been Putting God’s Work Off?

Today’s Scripture

Haggai 1:9

“You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why? Because my house lies desolate, while each of you runs to your own house, declares the LORD of hosts.”
Translated from the Chinese passage above.

Devotion: Pausing in Our Busyness to Reconsider Our Priorities

In Haggai’s time, the people who had returned to Jerusalem were busy rebuilding their own lives, while the work of rebuilding the temple had stopped. They had not forgotten God entirely. They simply kept thinking that their own affairs needed attention first, and God’s house could wait.

The word translated as “attend to” carries the meaning of “run.” They hurried to care for their own houses, yet delayed taking action for God’s house. God was not condemning them for caring for their families. He was confronting their willingness to leave His house desolate while pursuing their own interests.

We can fall into the same pattern. Work needs to be completed, families need care, and daily life brings many demands. Prayer gets postponed until we have time. Bible reading waits until we are less busy. What God has placed on our hearts gets pushed aside again and again. Eventually, “I’ll do it later” becomes something we leave undone indefinitely.

God said, “You expected much … it turned out to be little.” In that particular situation, He used poor harvests to discipline His people and awaken them to return to Him. This does not mean that every hardship we face today is God’s punishment. It does remind us, however, that no amount of effort or planning can replace walking with Him.

Putting God first does not mean neglecting our families or responsibilities. It means seeking His will as we fulfil those responsibilities each day—working honestly, treating others with love, and making real time for worship, prayer, and obedience.

God called His people to rebuild the temple. He also calls us to put our hearts and priorities in order. Today, we can begin with one concrete step in response to something He has prompted us to do, but which we have long delayed.

Today’s Reflection

Have I been rushing to fulfil my own plans while repeatedly putting off God’s prompting? What action will I take today to give God first place in my life?
