When Our Feet Obey but Our Hearts Resist

Date: 31 October 2026

Scripture: Jonah 4:2

“I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.”

Devotion

The book of Jonah presents a striking contrast: the sailors turn to fear God, the great fish obeys His command, and the people of Nineveh—from the king to the ordinary citizens—repent. God responds to their turning from evil by withholding the announced disaster. Yet Jonah, the prophet who knows God, continues to resist His heart.

Jonah’s problem was not that he did not know God was merciful. Precisely because he knew, he did not want to go to Nineveh. He welcomed God’s deliverance for himself but did not want his enemies to receive the same grace. Eventually, his feet took him to Nineveh, but his heart remained rooted in his own judgment.

God’s decision to withhold disaster does not mean His character is inconsistent. It reveals His steadfast willingness to show mercy to those who repent. What needed to change was Jonah’s unforgiving heart.

We can be like Jonah: doing what is asked while inwardly resisting, speaking about grace while insisting that a particular person must pay. God desires more than the completion of a task. Through obedience, He wants us to grow in His compassion.

God did not easily give up on Nineveh, and neither did He give up on Jonah. Through patient questions and teaching, He invited His stubborn prophet to move beyond his narrow perspective and enter into the wideness of His love.

Today’s Reflection

Is my obedience expressed only through my actions, without a willing heart? When God shows grace to someone I dislike, can I rejoice with Him?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, reveal the stubbornness within me. Forgive me for gladly receiving Your grace while resisting Your kindness towards others. Give me a tender heart, so that my heart follows my obedient steps. Teach me to see people through Your eyes and treat them with Your compassion. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen.
