Refined to Offer in Righteousness

Today’s Scripture | Malachi 3:2–3
2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like a launderer’s soap.
3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. He will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will bring offerings to the LORD in righteousness.
Devotional
“Who can stand when he appears?” The previous verse says that the Lord whom the people seek will come to his temple. Yet when the Lord they have been waiting for finally comes, they too will come under his scrutiny.
Malachi uses two images. A refiner’s fire brings impurities in gold and silver to the surface so they can be removed. A launderer’s soap washes dirt out of cloth. Both images point to the same thing. The Lord comes to purify those who serve before him.
Verse 3 gives us a picture worth pausing over. “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.” He will purify the Levites so that they can bring offerings to the Lord in righteousness. God examines both the offerings on the altar and the people who bring them. We can go on carrying out our duties while gradually growing careless or becoming more concerned with others’ approval. The Lord’s refining reaches into these places that others cannot see, so that what we offer reflects what we believe.
Today’s Reflection
In the ways I serve that have become routine, is there an attitude I’ve grown so used to that I need to ask the Lord to purify it?
Prayer
Lord, search my heart. Help me see where I have grown careless or proud in serving you, and where I have come to seek the approval of others. Purify me so that I may come before you with a sincere heart and live out the righteousness that pleases you in all I do each day. Amen.
