百年时间胶囊,使我想起上一代留下的属灵产业;
回到福清,使我重新思想自己的根源;
宋尚节留下的足迹,使我看见上一代为福音所付出的代价;
记念,是为了重新发现;
重新发现,是为了继续承接;
过去,有人忠心撒种;
今天,我们重新挖掘、重新发现;
In 2024, when I came across a report about the discovery of a century-old time capsule at Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church, a friend told me that Dr. John Sung had also held revival meetings at this church many years ago.
This piece of history deeply touched me and stirred something within me: a desire to return to Fuqing, my ancestral hometown, to rediscover and receive the spiritual heritage left by the previous generation.
Later, when I travelled to Fuqing, it happened to be around September 27, 2024. After I arrived and checked into my hotel, a local friend told me that John Sung’s former residence was nearby. It was also then that I noticed something I had not previously realized: September 27 was John Sung’s birthday.
Not long ago, I discovered another meaningful historical connection. On September 27, 2011, marking the 110th anniversary of John Sung’s birth, churches in Singapore specially chose Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church as the venue for a commemorative thanksgiving service. About 500 Christians from different denominations attended, and several people who had been involved in John Sung’s ministry also shared their testimonies during the gathering.
Looking at all this, fragments that once seemed scattered across different times and places gradually appear to form a connecting thread:
The century-old time capsule reminded me of the spiritual heritage left by an earlier generation;
returning to Fuqing caused me to reflect again on my own roots;
the footsteps left by John Sung showed me the price the previous generation paid for the Gospel;
and the date September 27 seemed to connect these experiences together.
Looking back, I have come to understand more deeply that returning to our roots is not about remaining in the past, and pursuing a spiritual heritage is not about exalting any particular person.
Like reopening a time capsule that has been buried for many years, what we are seeking is not merely to discover what happened in the past. Rather, it is to rediscover how God worked through the previous generation—and to ask how we, in this generation, should carry forward what has been entrusted to us.
We remember so that we may rediscover.
We rediscover so that we may carry it forward.
We carry it forward so that we may pass it on to the next generation.
In the past, others faithfully sowed the seeds.
Today, we dig again and rediscover what has been entrusted to us.
May the fire of the Gospel that once burned brightly
continue to burn in this generation
and be passed on to the generation to come.
