Remove the Old Leaven, Embrace the New Life

Devotional – July 28, 2026

Scripture

Exodus 12:15

“For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day shall be cut off from Israel.”

Devotional

Immediately after the Passover, God instituted the Feast of Unleavened Bread, commanding the Israelites to eat unleavened bread for seven days and to remove all leaven from their homes.

Though leaven is small, it gradually spreads throughout the entire batch of dough. For this reason, Scripture often uses leaven as a symbol of sin, hypocrisy, and the corrupting influence of evil (1 Corinthians 5:6–8). God’s command to remove the leaven was not only to commemorate Israel’s hurried departure from Egypt, but also to remind His redeemed people that those who have been delivered should leave behind their old way of life and walk in the holiness of a new life.

This reminds me of the traditional Chinese custom of spring cleaning before Lunar New Year. Families thoroughly clean their homes and clear away old, unwanted things in preparation for a new beginning. Although the meanings are different, both share a similar picture: before stepping into something new, the old must first be removed.

Yet what God cares about is not whether our houses are clean, but whether our hearts are willing to be cleansed. Are we willing to remove the pride, bitterness, jealousy, greed, deceit, and disobedience within us so that the life of Christ may fill us?

The Apostle Paul wrote, “For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7) Jesus has already accomplished our redemption. We do not earn salvation through our works. Rather, because we have already received His grace, we willingly allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts each day, removing the “old leaven” from our lives so that we may live in sincerity, purity, and a life that is pleasing to God.

True removal of leaven is not about cleaning yeast out of the kitchen—it is about allowing God to cleanse our hearts every day.

Reflection

  1. Is there any “old leaven” still remaining in my life that I have not surrendered to God—such as bitterness, pride, fear, or hidden sin?
  2. How can I respond to God’s call today by living a life that is worthy of the grace I have received?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Jesus Christ as my Passover Lamb. Through His precious blood, You have redeemed me and set me free from the power of sin and death. I ask that Your Holy Spirit would search my heart each day, helping me remove the old leaven from my life and cleanse my thoughts, words, and actions. May I not only experience Your salvation, but also live a life that is holy, sincere, and pleasing to You, bringing glory to Your name. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
