The Source of Life

Devotional – July 31, 2026

Scripture

“Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.”
— Deuteronomy 34:7

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live, and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him. For the Lord is your life, and He will give you many years in the land He swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
— Deuteronomy 30:19–20

Moses lived to the age of 120, yet his eyes remained clear and his strength had not diminished. It is an astonishing testimony. Many people today might wonder: Did he exercise regularly? Did he follow a particularly healthy diet? Did he maintain an excellent daily routine?

From the biblical record, Moses certainly lived an active life.

He spent forty years tending sheep in Midian, followed by another forty years leading Israel through the wilderness. He repeatedly climbed Mount Sinai, and even at the age of 120, he ascended Mount Nebo to view the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 34:1). His lifestyle was simple, physically demanding, and filled with daily walking—bearing many similarities to what we now recognize as healthy living.

Yet, this is not where Deuteronomy places its emphasis.

Scripture never says, “Moses’ eyes remained clear because he exercised,” nor does it say, “His strength remained because he ate well.”

Instead, the book of Deuteronomy continually points us to a deeper truth: the true source of life is not found in human methods, but in God Himself.

Before his death, Moses declared to Israel:

“Choose life… love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him. For the Lord is your life.” (Deuteronomy 30:19–20)

These words summarize the message of Deuteronomy and beautifully reflect Moses’ own life.

Moses faithfully fulfilled his human responsibilities. He worked diligently, served faithfully, and lived with discipline. Yet the reason he remained strong at 120 was not merely good habits—it was God’s sustaining grace and faithful provision throughout his life.

Even more striking is what Scripture says next:

“And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said.” (Deuteronomy 34:5)

In other words, Moses did not die because his body failed. He completed the mission God had entrusted to him and departed this life at God’s appointed time while he still possessed strength.

Today, we too should faithfully care for our bodies through wise stewardship—maintaining healthy habits, regular exercise, and balanced rhythms of life, for our bodies are gifts from God.

But above all, we must remember that what truly sustains and renews us is not merely a healthy lifestyle, but a daily walk with God.

When God becomes the source of our life, He not only gives us wisdom to care for our physical bodies, but He continually renews our inner being until we have finished the work He has entrusted to us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving me both life and this body, enabling me to fulfill the purpose You have prepared for me. Grant me wisdom to care for my health, to live with discipline, and to serve You faithfully. Above all, teach me to love You, listen to Your voice, and hold fast to You, for You are my life, and the length of my days is in Your hands.

May I, like Moses, seek not merely to live a long life, but to live a faithful one, finishing the work You have entrusted to me.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
