Not “God Is on My Side,” but “I Am on His Side”

Devotional – August 1, 2026

Scripture

As Joshua approached Jericho, he saw a man standing before him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua asked him,

“Are you for us or for our enemies?”

He replied,

“Neither, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.”

Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground and said,

“What message does my Lord have for His servant?”

(Joshua 5:13–14)

Devotional Reflection

Joshua was about to face the greatest battle of his life—the fortified city of Jericho.

He needed a strategy, strength, and victory.

Under pressure, he asked a question that we often ask ourselves:

“Are You on my side?”

But the Lord’s answer completely changed his perspective:

“Neither. I have come as the Commander of the army of the LORD.”

In other words:

The real question is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on His.

God does not come to support our plans.

He comes to lead us into His plan.

He does not endorse our ideas;

He calls us to surrender to His will.

When Joshua heard this, he immediately fell facedown in worship.

He no longer asked,

“Whose side are You on?”

Instead, he asked,

“What message does my Lord have for His servant?”

That is the posture of surrender.

That is where true victory begins.

Today’s Reminder

In difficult times we often pray:

“Lord, be on my side.”

“Lord, bless my decision.”

“Lord, make my plans succeed.”

But perhaps the Lord is asking us:

“Are you willing to be on My side?”

“Will you let Me lead?”

True peace is not found in God supporting our plans,

but in walking within His plan.

True strength is not that God stands with us,

but that we stand with Him.

Prayer

Lord,

Too often I ask You to support my plans, forgetting that You are the Commander.

Today I lay down my own ideas, plans, and anxieties.

I no longer ask You to stand on my side.

Instead, lead me to stand on Yours.

May Your voice guide every step I take.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
