Clothed with Compassion and Kindness

September 15, 2026

Scripture | Colossians 3:12–14

【Colossians 3:12】Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

【Colossians 3:13】Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

【Colossians 3:14】And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Devotional

Paul first reminds us that our identity is “God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved.” All spiritual transformation begins not with forcing ourselves to change, but with receiving God’s love. Because we are already loved in Christ, we no longer need to prove our worth through our own efforts. Instead, we can live out compassion and kindness from the love we have received.

Since we are people who are loved, we should put on the life God has given us. Compassion means being able to see the needs of others; kindness means being willing to draw near, care, and lend a helping hand after seeing those needs. Such a life is not merely moved inwardly but responds to God’s love through practical action.

What the people around us lack may not always be money. Some need a meal, some need practical help, some need a word of encouragement, and others simply need someone willing to stop and listen to them patiently. Compassion keeps us from overlooking these needs, while kindness moves us from “seeing” to “acting.”

This kind of action also includes bearing with and forgiving one another in our relationships. Paul says that just as the Lord forgave us, we should also forgive others. Since we have received the Lord’s compassion and forgiveness, we cannot keep grace only for ourselves. We must also allow that grace to shape our words, attitudes, and choices.

Therefore, helping those in need, bearing with the weak, and forgiving those who have wronged us are not merely isolated acts of kindness. They are concrete testimonies of putting on Christ. When we respond to others with compassion, kindness, and love, people can see through our lives the Lord in whom we trust.

Because we are loved, we receive grace; because we have received grace, we are willing to act; and through our actions, we bear witness to Christ.

Today’s Reflection

Is there someone around me whom God is calling me to notice today?

Am I truly aware that I am loved, and am I willing to share the compassion and kindness I have received from the Lord?

Can I do more than simply notice someone’s need and express care through a practical action, so that this person may experience Christ’s love through my life?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me and making me holy and dearly loved. Thank You for first treating me with compassion, kindness, and forgiveness, enabling me to receive Your abundant grace.

Please help me remember my identity continually. May I not seek to prove my worth through my own efforts, but receive strength from Your love. Give me a compassionate heart so that I can see those in need around me. Give me also a willing heart to act—not merely to be moved, but to offer practical help, give generously, bear with others, and forgive.

May I clothe myself with compassion, kindness, and love, and live out the grace I have received from You, so that others may see Christ through my life and experience Your love.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
